Nutrition during pregnancy

Maintaining good nutritional diet during pregnancy is very important for the health of the child and mother. Nutrition education and counseling is a widely used strategy to improve the nutritional status of women during pregnancy. The strategy focuses primarily on:

Maintaining a healthy and nutritional diet by increasing the diversity of foods consumed during and after pregnancy.

Intake of adequate protein and energy through a sufficient and balanced diet

Intake of enough micronutrients from food, and fortified foods.

Many Doctors suggest that nutrition education can support optimal weight gain and reduces the risk of anemia, increase birth weight and lower the risk of pre-term delivery.

From a nutritional point of view, Pregnant women tend to be the most malnutrition population. This has various ill factors associated with it like low birth weight, overweight, and several consequences. Yet many people suffer from chronic energy deficiency (CED) and pave a way to address undernutrition during pregnancy and lactation. Undernutrition also increases the susceptibility for infections. While undernutrition continues to be a major problem, overnutrition is also being witnessed during reproductive age. So there is much need to give the pregnant women diet and nutrition advice and care.
